Description
Why this coffee?
In 2016 Migoti Coffee Company built a coffee washing station at Migoti Mountain, partnering with industry experts who provided technical expertise. Coffee trees are owned by the community, and Migoti purchases the coffee cherries directly from the farmers who harvest and deliver the cherries to our station. We like to support projects like this which develop the economic prospects of the area.
Where is this coffee grown and farmed?
This washing station operates in a region referred to as Migoti Mountain, in Mutambu Commune of Bujumbura Province, 30 km from the centre of Bujumbura. The name “Migoti” comes from a local indigenous tree, which is also the name of the mountain where Migoti built their first coffee washing station.
How has the coffee been processed?
This is a fully washed coffee. The washing station is operated by a local team of ten permanent staff and over 250 temporary workers who are employed during the coffee season from March to June. The station manager, Zephyrin Banzubaze, is responsible for managing all of the staff to train coffee farmers, receive and select coffee cherries, process the coffee, oversee the coffee drying process, store and mill the dry parchment coffee and prepare the final green coffee for export.
What can you expect from the smell and taste?
The bourbon variety grown at high elevations in Burundi is characteristically “sweet with bright acidity, big body, floral, citrus and spice. This is a classic example of that.
How do we like it?
Batch brewed filter coffee or French Press are both great method’s for this coffee. However, we enjoy it just as much as espresso with or without milk, where the medium bodied backbone of cocoa is balanced with orange acidity and the aromatic’s of cola and molasses.
